BOSTON (AP) – Massachusetts public health officials have confirmed a third infant flu death in the state this season.

The state's Department of Public Health confirmed Tuesday that the last child to die of the flu was a girl from Middlesex County. His age and hometown have not been revealed.

Authorities have previously confirmed that a 12-year-old boy from Milford and a 4-year-old girl from Framingham had died as a result of a flu.

Last season, there was a pediatric death associated with influenza in Massachusetts.

Dr. Larry Madoff, the department's Director of Epidemiology and Immunization, said the months of January and February were the peak of the influenza season and that vaccination was the best defense.

According to estimates by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 12,000 to 56,000 deaths are due to complications of influenza in the country.
