Karl Lagerfeld once called "Joan of Arc Design"

Superstar fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld died at the age of 85 in Paris, French media reported.

The German designer, who was the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, was one of the most prolific personalities in the industry and worked until his death.

Lagerfeld has also designed collections for his own brand.

The designer had been sick for several weeks and had missed several fashion shows.

The designer Henry Holland paid tribute to Lagerfeld on social media, using one of his quotes.

Youth

He was born Karl Otto Lagerfeldt in 1933 in pre-war Germany. Lagerfeld changed his original Lagerfeldt surname, because he thought it sounded "more commercial".

As a teenager, he emigrated to Paris and became a design assistant for Pierre Balmain before working at Fendi and ChloƩ in the 1960s.
