The former NFL running back and Tennessee college star, Reggie Cobb, died Saturday, according to the San Francisco 49ers. He was 50 years old.
Cobb spent the last 10 years as a scout for the 49ers.
The team did not disclose the reason for the unexpected death.
"We are devastated by the sudden loss of Reggie Cobb, an excellent teammate and faithful friend," said General Manager John Lynch in a statement. "Reggie was an enthusiastic and passionate person who had the special ability to light up a room with her personality and contagious smile.
"For 10 years, the 49ers have been better thanks to Reggie and the unique qualities that he possessed.He was an outstanding scout and an exemplary man whose years of service at the service of this organization and the National Football League will not be forgotten.Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time of mourning. "
Cobb has played seven seasons in the NFL, amassing 3,743 yards and 25 touchdowns, as well as 123 assists for 949 yards and two goals.
His best season was 1,171 yards and nine touchdowns in 1992 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played four seasons for the Buc before spending a season apart with Green Bay Packers (1994), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and New York Jets (1996).
Buccaneers expressed their condolences on their Twitter account.
"We are saddened to learn of the passing of former running back Reggie Cobb, our thoughts and prayers are with the Cobb family."
Prior to his NFL career, Cobb was outstanding in Tennessee, winning 2360 yards and 26 touchdowns in three seasons. The distance is 11th in the history of the school, and he is seventh tied.
Cobb had 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns in first year in 1987.
Cobb was a second round pick (30th overall) in the 1990 NFL draft by Tampa Bay. He was the seventh selected carrier.
