Granville Adams, the actor best known for his portrayal of Zahir Arif in HBO’s “Oz”, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.

The news was shared in a tribute posted Sunday by showrunner and “Oz” executive producer Tom Fontana on his Instagram.

“Good night, sweet prince / and flights of angels sing to you to rest,” Fontana wrote.

Fontana and “Oz” star Dean Winters launched a GoFundMe campaign earlier this year to help Adams and his family pay for the actor’s medical care. The campaign had raised $ 99,800, surpassing its goal of $ 69,500, although it remained active as Adams continued to need treatment.

“As many of you know, our friend and brother Granville Adams has been diagnosed with cancer,” Fontana wrote on GoFundMe in January. “In just a few months, medical bills have skyrocketed to astronomical levels. Not only does he have to fight this ruthless disease, but he now has to get rid of the hospital bills that the insurance company refuses to pay. In this quarter alone, unpaid invoices amounted to $ 69,550. We want to come together and show our love to Granville by clearing the bills for this quarter, by providing concrete support to Granville in their fight against this vicious disease.

Adams was an actor in all six seasons of “Oz”, portraying Zahir Arif in 48 episodes. After being incarcerated for possession of stolen property, Arif undergoes a transformation and reforms through Islam to become one of the quietest prisoners in Oswald State Correctional Facility. Adams also had a role in NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street” and appeared on “Empire”.

Winters shared his own tribute to Granville on Instagram.

“I first met Granny in 1992 and immediately drank the Kool Aid,” Winters wrote. His smile was infectious, his chuckle was intoxicating. He never, ever said anything bad about anyone and I challenge anyone who knows him to say anything negative about this man. Granville was beloved, period… A humble and beautiful soul who has just raised the hereafter to a whole new level. We will miss you my friend.

“I lost my brother today after a long battle with cancer”, costar “Oz” Kirk accevedo wrote on Twitter. “I don’t do well with loss because I don’t know him. Yo Mamie, we’ll cut him off on the other side someday. Until then … Be still my friend.
