Deathloop, Arkane’s next FPS game, looks absolutely awesome. Their new murder sandbox looks like Dishonored meets Hitman, and it’s certainly no accident. It’s done by the developers of Dishonored, of course, but Arkane now says they’re bringing “quite a bit” of supernatural abilities you’ll remember to Deathloop. If you thought you’d spotted some familiar skills in the trailers so far, you’re not wrong.
“As much as we wanted to do something very original with this game, we also wanted some familiarity,” says game director Dinga Bakaba in an interview with IGN. “We’ve decided to bring back some of the powers that we have in the Dishonored series. I think it’s something that will make players feel right at home.”
One you’ve probably spotted is Blink, which lets you teleport a short distance. So far, in almost every Deathloop trailer, Colt uses it to appear behind unsuspecting enemies or gain a height advantage by scaling buildings.
As we have seen, your main objective in Deathloop is to kill eight targets, the Visionaries, in a single day. Failure to do this on time (or die) will reset the loop. The challenge is figuring out how to do it on time by manipulating your targets and developing your own abilities.
Arkane explains that Deathloop’s greatest abilities come from rare items called “slabs” that many visionary targets in the game have. Hanging up these slabs will give Colt his talent. A visionary has the Kinesis ability which allows him to throw people in the air. You can see Colt doing the same in yesterday’s new Dishonored trailer above.
Bakaba hasn’t let it be known exactly what other abilities we’ll see, borrowed from Dishonored or otherwise. For my money, it sounds like the Domino ability that links enemies together so that they die simultaneously.
Interestingly, Bakaba also mentions that there is in fact a correct answer to break the loop. “In order to line them up, there is only one solution, so really the game is a gigantic puzzle that you have to solve and to complete this puzzle,” he says. Even though there is only one proper order to kill each target, you can still choose from a whole range of ways to perform the act using environmental hazards and your many skills.
I don’t know about all of you, but “a solution” seems like a challenge to me.
Graham says the new trailer has it fully incorporated and I agree. It sounds stylish and yes I can’t get this song out of my head either.
Deathloop releases May 21 on Steam. It will also be on the PS5.
