Arkane and Bethesda’s new game, Deathloop, will include an infamous system in the PC version of the upcoming stealth shooter.
The Steam page for Bethesda’s upcoming FPS Deathloop appeared today, and eagle-eyed fans noticed a detail about the shooter that could potentially be a deciding factor for some players. Arkane Lyon and Bethesda will include the infamous Denuvo DRM on the Steam version of the game, potentially opening up users to performance issues and unwanted processes, should they choose to install. This is not a good look for Bethesda, which this year included Denuvo in Eternal doomthe Steam version of only to drop it a week later. Fans and developers alike have reported that the software, which aims to prevent illegal copying and cheating, has been responsible for affecting gameplay in titles like Tekken 7 and Resident Evil 3, or worse, causing degradation of PC storage due to excessive reading and writing to SSDs of drives.
Aside from causing problems for legitimate users, Denuvo hasn’t always been able to do exactly what it was designed to do – prevent users from tampering with games. Players were able to easily bypass Eternal doomthe software version when Bethesda included a DRM-free version of the game executable in the game files on its own launcher, and the same happened with Rage 2 in 2019.
Some PC game fans interested in games like Star Wars Squadrons, Resident Evil 3, and now Deathloop Sometimes they would have turned to buying games and then pirating them so they could play without facing the complications of copy protection software, or end up skipping titles because of it. Denuvo has stuck around for the past few years due to his difficulty to crack, but this efficiency has come at the expense of the confidence and goodwill of the players.
Only time will tell if Bethesda chooses to stick with the controversial software for its shooter, which has otherwise been fairly well received as its release nears. A delay on summer moved Deathloopthe 2020 release date and May, but it seems like the surreal atmosphere of the shooter and DishonoredGameplay like this will make the wait worthwhile.
Meanwhile, on consoles, Deathloop should be an exclusive timed console for the PlayStation 5, along with another Bethesda game Ghostwire: Tokyo. Both titles will retain the existing agreement between the publisher and Sony, even if Bethesda itself becomes a division of Xbox Game Studios under Microsoft. It’s unclear if its future titles will be limited to Xbox Series X and S, but fans should stay prepared for the possibility as the next generation launches.
