At one point, the San Francisco 49ers were leading 17-3 with just over a quarterback left in the game. Less than five minutes later, San Francisco was trailed by three, with their hopes of breaking a three-game losing streak. The 49ers defense deserves much of the credit for delaying Jared Goff and Co. for almost the entire contest, including the Rams’ last drive that helped set San Francisco for a Robbie Gould field goal. The 49ers improved their record to 5-6 after the 23-20 Week 12 win. Here are nine takeaways from the divisional thriller.
Kevin Givens stood out to open the match. In the Rams’ first practice, he recorded a tackle for loss on a carry over to running back Darrell Henderson. Two games later on a Malcolm Brown carry over, safety Jimmie Ward stripped the ball from the running back as Givens landed on the fumble.
The 49ers failed to capitalize on turnover as Aaron Donald hijacked a pass meant for Deebo Samuel who floated in the arms of Rams safety Jordan Fuller. The San Francisco defense managed to hold Jared Goff and Co. to a basket.
Samuel had his first reception since returning from injury in the 49ers ‘third practice of the game – a throw sweep the receiver took 33 yards off the Rams’ 37-yard line. Two plays later on a fake play, Nick Mullens connected with Samuel for a 26-yard pickup. Raheem Mostert took over on the outside in the ensuing play for an 8-yard touchdown, his first rushing score since Week 2 against the New York Jets. Samuel and Mostert combined 92 of the 49ers for 104 yards in the first quarter.
Samuel ended the contest with 11 receptions for 134 yards in his first return game since Week 7. According to Pro Football Focus, 83 of his 133 yards have come after contact, the most by a wide receiver in a game this season.
