Deezer D, who passed the role of nurse Malik McGrath in the beloved medical drama “ER”, has passed away. He was 55 years old.
Although no official cause of death has been revealed, Deezer reportedly died of a heart attack on Thursday morning, his brother Marshawn told TMZ.
Deezer was part of NBC’s iconic must-watch Thursday Night lineup for nearly 200 episodes spanning 1994-2009.
The actor – whose birth name was Dearon Thompson – was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home. He had previously survived a major six-hour heart operation in 2009.
“I have a leaky heart valve and the aorta has widened beyond what it’s supposed to be,” Deezer told Radar Online at the time. “As soon as the doctor identified what was going on, he put me here… What I had been going through for a year – it was scary. I am not afraid of surgery.
In addition to his longtime role in “ER” produced by Steven Spielberg alongside George Clooney and Julianna Marguiles, Deezer has played roles in cult films such as “CB4” in 1993 with Chris Rock and “Romy & Michelle’s High. School ‘in 1997 Homecoming’ with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.
He also appeared in the infamous 1991 “Cool as Ice” with rapper Vanilla Ice – and made a career in hip-hop himself, appearing on the soundtracks of “CB4” and “Crazy As Hell” in 2002.
Deezer released his only full solo recording, “Delayed, But Not Denied,” in 2008.
A new single, “History Can’t Be Stopped”, was released posthumously on Friday. Sadly, the trail was teased just three days ago on Instagram.
His last acting credit listed on IMBD is a small role in the 2017 TV movie “Crowning Jules” opposite the original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Kristy Swanson.
In recent years, Deezer has launched a career as a Christian speaker and worked as a personal trainer, as shown on his Instagram page.
His fellow actors and crew have already started taking to Twitter to pay tribute to the late actor.
“I had the pleasure of working with Deezer D on ER”, actor Terry Wilkerson posted. “One of the nicest, sweetest souls ever. Even before Diversity was popular, it did so on one of the biggest shows on the network. Prayers to his family. Be still my brother.
“ER” producer Neal Baer shared that he was “sad to learn” of the death of a “very nice and kind man [who was] wonderful to work with.
Scott Baio’s Tribute on Twitter included a tease for an upcoming project in which he appears with Deezer.
