The court documents filed by the lawyers of the seven women involved in the case – originally filed in 2014 – indicate that the plaintiffs reached a settlement and ask the judge to dismiss the case.
But Cosby's press rep, Andrew Wyatt, said the insurance company AIG had entered into the settlement without Cosby's knowledge or without his consent.
"Mr. Cosby has not settled any deal with anyone," Wyatt said in a statement to CNN. "He is not paying anything to anyone, and he is still pursuing counterclaims, and AIG has decided to settle these cases, without notice, without the permission and / or consent of Mr. Cosby." and he maintains his innocence. In response to the allegations raised by Wyatt, AIG issued a statement that the company "does not publicly comment on specific claims issues".
"Some insurance policies give insurers the power to settle claims when the insured has been informed," AIG spokesman Matthew Gallagher told CNN.
Lawyer Joe Cammarata, who represents the plaintiffs in this case, declined to comment because of the confidentiality of the settlement.
The plaintiffs are all women who have publicly accused Cosby of sexual misconduct: Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis and Angela Leslie. The women claimed that Cosby had damaged their reputation through statements by their media representatives, who called their allegations of abuse by the comedian "absolutely false", "unsubstantiated", "fabricated" and more, according to the court complaint.
In 2015, Cosby sued women, claiming that they had "maliciously, opportunistically, falsely and defamatoryly accused of sexual misconduct against him", among others. According to court documents, this action may be brought in accordance with the terms of the settlement reached in the original case. A court must still lift the stay of the counterclaim and allow Cosby's counterclaims to proceed before any discovery can take place.
In 2018, Cosby was convicted of three counts of indecent assault by a Pennsylvania court in a separate case. He is currently serving a three to ten year prison sentence in this case, although he is appealing his conviction and maintaining his innocence in all allegations of sexual assault.
