Last year, the Baltimore Ravens turned defensive heads with their record offense. Unsurprisingly, the D coordinators have spent the offseason studying Lamar Jackson’s offense with a fine comb.
Apparently they left with some testimonials.
Jackson said The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday that the defenses know what the Ravens are going to do when they line up.
“They call our parts, stuff like that,” Jackson said. “They know what we’re doing. Sometimes things don’t go our way if they beat us up.”
Eisen insisted on Jackson whether he could hear defenders announcing the Ravens’ games.
“Yeah, they definitely do,” Jackson said. “Like, ‘run’ and stuff like that. ‘Watch out for that, watch out for that.’ Sometimes that’s what happens. “
With the defenses ready for the Ravens’ multi-faceted running game, that is part of the reason why this season Baltimore has lacked juice and consistency for long stretches. Even with the defenses knowing some clues, the Ravens kept their 20+ point streak alive. He now sits 31 straight in Week 10 against New England. Baltimore is also averaging 170.1 rushing yards per game, at the top of the NFL.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard whispers over defenders knowing the Ravens are playing. After Baltimore lost to Pittsburgh earlier this month, linebacker Alex Highsmith said he knew where Jackson wanted to go with the ball before an interception in the third quarter.
“I knew when this game started they were coming back to it because they played the same game in the first half, and I didn’t go deep enough,” Highsmith said at the time via ESPN. “So I learned from that game and fell deeper. … the ball fell into my hands.”
At 6-2, Baltimore remains ready for a playoff bid although the offense isn’t as powerful as it was a year ago. Half of the season remains with offensive coordinator Greg Roman and Jackson to correct issues before the playoffs start.
