Dell EMC Uses Cloud to Deliver Less Costly Disaster Recovery – Blocks and Files

Dell EMC announced Cloud Storage Services, a low-cost disaster recovery solution that eliminates the need for a separate identity recovery site. Instead, the service uses the public cloud and an MSP intermediate.

The service is a two-step affair, in which clients replicate the data to a Managed Service Provider (MSP) site, which has a direct connection in a public cloud.

In the event of a disaster on the local site, the computers switch to the public cloud and the compute instances stored there access the data in the arrays using a direct connection with a 3 ms link or less.

Cloud storage services support PowerMax, Unity, and Isilon field bays. SC arrays are not supported.

Unconnected Direct Connect arrays can replicate data to the public cloud for a second or more, depending on the network bandwidth used.

Dell envisions that clients typically replicate a subset of data on the MSP site, so that the storage arrays are smaller than their on-premises parents.

Cloud Storage Services supports four public cloud targets: VMware Cloud on AWS, AWS, Azure, and GCP. Dell EMC states that the multi-cloud approach allows the compute instances of each cloud to access the MSP arrays. There is no need to move data to these clouds or pay for storage. Users only pay for cloud computing when it is to be used.

Customers running VMware environments can implement an emergency recovery system using VMware Cloud on AWS as a secondary site. VMware Site Recovery Manager and native replication of Dell EMC storage arrays enable the automation of disaster recovery operations.
