Delta Air Lines Says It Has The Capacity To Ship COVID-19 Vaccines Across United States
The commercial airline released a statement Thursday morning explaining that it has large warehouses and cool facilities in key cities, including Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle. Delta also said it has partnered with 49 “pharmaceutical airports” around the world, which has given the company confidence that it can take on this task.

Delta reportedly conducted test shipments earlier this year to prepare for vaccine distribution. And it looks like Delta and other airlines will be in high demand now that the United States has more than 14 million confirmed cases of coronavirus on Thursday, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard.
“The efficient and rapid distribution of vaccines as they reach final approvals is one of the most critical elements in containing the virus. That’s why we created a Vaccine Working Group months ago to understand the requirements and work with experts from the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, to create scalable solutions to support the industry, ”Delta Cargo vice president Rob Walpole said in a statement. “After successfully shipping test vaccines throughout the summer and fall, we are confident in our capabilities and are ready to help ensure wide distribution of approved vaccines.”

To prepare for vaccine distribution, Delta updated its existing pharmaceutical distribution protocols. The distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Delta will include high-level access and priority boarding and an operational 24/7 vaccine control tower that offers centralized monitoring and customer reporting.
According to Delta’s press release, there will also be “charter options dedicated to pharmaceutical ready freight for operations inside and outside our existing network”.

The airline offers four personalized pharmaceutical shipping options, which are temperature specific to maintain the integrity of the vaccines being shipped.
