Unlike the cheeky surprise release of its first free chapter in 2018, we got a warning regarding Deltarune Chapter 2. It’s out now, also free, as creator Toby Fox says the world has been pretty tough lately. The game that isn’t a sequel or prequel but some sort of game related to Fox Undertale’s hit RPG is still a work in progress, but the final piece of the story should hopefully keep fans busy. chatting and searching for secrets for a while. Again. This may indeed take a while, again. Fox plans to release Chapters Three through Five in a paid version when they’re completed, but even he doesn’t know when that will be just yet.
“I originally planned to only release the chapters when they’re all done, but honestly it’s hard for creators and fans to go without a release for long. So I changed my mind.” Toby Fox said in an update article on The Status of Deltarune.
The next chapters are currently in development, which Fox says will all be released together. Seriously this time. It will be a paid release. Also seriously this time. As to when, Fox doesn’t know yet. And for how much? More than Undertale, which costs £ 7 / $ 10.
Interestingly, Fox says that Deltarune Chapter 2 might actually be the biggest in the game. “I think it’s the biggest chapter in the whole game in a lot of ways,” Fox said. “The number of cutscenes is the most important, the story involves many characters and there are many other aspects that made it a difficult chapter.” It’s good to have it for free, then.
“It was a really silly chapter,” Fox also said, “and the next one is gonna be super silly too!”
Likely thanks in part to that notice, Deltarune opened the door with over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam alone when it arrived on Friday. That’s good, way above Undertale’s lifetime record on Steam. Simultaneous players aren’t a particularly vital stat in a single player game, but hey, it’s still interesting to see. Toby Fox’s previous SNES-inspired adventure is still one of the best RPGs on PC, according to the RPS team, so no wonder people have been starving for more Deltarune.
Since the arrival of Chapter 2, it has already received a few fixes with fixes for crashes and controller issues. You can get quick details of the software locks that have been resolved this way.
I guess Toby Fox’s games are things people really like to experience firsthand. If you’re in the mood for a tip, Fox left a note at the end of the announcement message that you might find him sleeping in the bottom of a dumpster and not picking up his pillow. Whether it’s a fitting clue or just a quirky joke, you’ll have to figure it out for yourself by downloading the Deltarune demo on Steam or Itch. You can also grab the original soundtrack from Chapter 2 on Bandcamp.
