On Sunday evening, the 73rd Tony Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York. And unlike last year, who saw Robert De Niro do a (random) cameo in which he cursed President Trump the night was relatively light in politics.
And then Bryan Cranston took the stage.
After accepting the award for best lead actor in a play for his dazzling Howard Beale tour Network, beating the likes of Jeff Daniels in Kill a mocking bird and Adam Driver in Burn thisCranston began his speech with a wry joke:sensational. Finally, an old hetero straight man is taking a break!
He thanked his actors and his team, as well as the legendary Paddy Chayefsky, who wrote the film on which the play is based, and his charming wife, Robin.
Then he attacked President Trump – and his regular attacks on the media to hold him accountable.
"Howard Beale is a fictional TV journalist who has been in the crosshairs because of his quest for the truth, and I would like to dedicate it to all the real journalists around the world … in print and broadcast, which are really in the crosshairs with their pursuit of the truth, "he said. "The media is not the enemy of the people. Demagoguery is the enemy of the people. Thank you very much, good night.
