The accusations of racism swirled Wednesday during Michael Cohen's congressional testimony, after Rashida Tlaib, a Democratic House recruit, appeared to accuse his lawmaking colleague, Mark Meadows, of being racist.
Tlaib, D-Mich., S addressed the chamber when she addressed her remarks to a Trump employee invited to the hearing by Meadows, R-N.C.
"It's not because a person of color, a black person works for her, that she is not racist and that it is insensitive that some would even say that someone would use an accessory, a black woman in this situation. Chamber, in this committee, is only racist in itself. "

Lynx Patton, Trump's collaborator and head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, wanted to be here to support President Trump. He asked that Tlaib's remarks be struck from the record.
"My nieces and nephews are people of color. Few people know it. You know that, Mr. Chairman. And to indicate that I asked someone who is a personal friend of the Trump family, who worked for him, who knows this particular person (waving to Cohen), what about her? comes to be an accessory – it's racist to suggest that I asked him to come here for this reason. "

Representative Elijah Cummings, chair of the committee, asked Tlaib to "rephrase" what she said.

Meadows continued to defend his decision to invite Patton.

Cummings thanked Meadows for his remarks, adding that the two men are best friends but that he did not believe that Tlaib called Meadows a racist.
"Of all the members of this committee, I said it and I got in trouble, but you are one of my best friends," Cummings said. "I could see and feel your pain. I feel it. And I do not think Ms. Tlaib intended to cause you that, that kind of pain and that kind of frustration.
Tlaib added this: "It was not my intention, and I'm sorry if that's what it gives. But I have talked about someone in general and, as everyone knows in this place, I am pretty direct. So if I wanted to say that, I would do it – but that's not what I said. "
