Democratic Debates: Here are the qualified candidates for the July 2020 Debate

[ad_1]

What Democratic candidates need to change

The second Democratic primary debate will take place on July 30 – but some candidates may not reach the thresholds of support and donations needed to participate in party debates.

Here is an overview of how candidates can qualify for the first two debates and who has qualified so far:

How the candidates qualify for the debates

In order to give most candidates the opportunity to participate in the debate, the National Democratic Committee has scheduled 12 debates in total. The first was held on two nights, June 26 and 27, and the second is scheduled for July 30 and 31. Candidates are randomly selected to appear on each date.

To qualify for the first two debates, applicants must meet one of two criteria: either to obtain 65,000 donors for their campaigns, with at least 200 donors in 20 different states, or to obtain at least 1% of the votes out of three in legitimate opinion polls by the committee. If more than 20 candidates qualify for the debate, the DNC announced that it would select participants with "a methodology giving priority to candidates meeting both thresholds, followed by the highest electoral average, followed by the most unique donors ".

With as many as two dozen qualified candidates for the debates both through surveys and donations, candidates with less support in polls are less likely to qualify.

How will the candidates be chosen for each night

The second debate will be broadcast on CNN and presenters Dana Bash, Don Lemon and Jake Tapper will host both nights. Candidates will be chosen each evening during a draw on July 17th.
