A Democratic senator questioned the timing of the fiery speech by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer last week, denigrating Republicans over negotiations to raise the federal debt ceiling, which left the Sen. Joe Manchin cringe and furious GOP lawmakers.
Schumer, in a Senate speech last Thursday, shredded Republicans for “playing a dangerous and risky partisan game” after 11 GOP senators stood with all 50 Democrats to end debate and make a raise short term of the country’s borrowing limit. .
The limit was extended until December on a party line vote.
Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) Told “Fox News Sunday” he understood the Democratic leader’s frustration with the process, but that the timing of his comments “may not be the best.”
“Frankly, I agree with the reasons Senator Schumer was so frustrated that this debt limit standoff was risky, unnecessary, was a fabricated crisis,” Coons told host Chris Wallace.
“But part of the reason Senator Manchin was in his head was because he thought our leaders should talk to each other directly. And we all agree that we need more stability in our Congress and in our country, ”continued the senator.
“So while I fully understand President Schumer’s deep frustration, maybe the timing hasn’t been the best,” Coons said.
Wallace noted Coons’ silliness and suggested, “Maybe we should say President Manchin at this point,” in reference to the West Virginia Democrat who holds a key Senate vote split 50-50.
Manchin was caught on video holding his face in his hands as Schumer spoke before walking away.
“I didn’t think it was appropriate at the time,” Manchin said moments later. “We must disarm. You can’t play politics. Neither of us can – both sides. Civility has disappeared.
Schumer’s comments infuriated Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Republicans would not join Democrats in raising the debt ceiling in a new vote in December.
“Last night, Republicans filled the leadership vacuum that has been disrupting the Senate since January. I am writing to let you know that I will no longer provide such assistance if your all-Democratic government sinks into another preventable crisis, ”McConnell wrote in a letter to President Biden on Friday.
McConnell (R-Ky.) Referred to Manchin’s reaction to the speech.
“Last night, in a bizarre spectacle, Senator Schumer exploded into a rant so partisan, angry and corrosive that even Democratic senators were visibly embarrassed by him and for him. This tantrum summed up and intensified a pattern of angry incompetence on Senator Schumer’s part, ”McConnell wrote.
