Impeachment officials spent hours building the case on Wednesday that Mr. Trump was responsible for inciting the mob that attacked the Capitol, saying the attack was the violent culmination of months of efforts of the former president to undermine the integrity of the election.
Officials revealed never-before-seen security footage from the halls of Congress to show how close the rioters were to lawmakers, staff and Vice President Mike Pence, who had resisted pleas from Mr Trump to obstruct the count electoral votes. Senators sat in silence as managers showcase the meticulously constructed schedule, saying they were shaken after seeing the violent episode again.
“I know how I felt in the Senate chamber when I could hear those voices. I knew what it was like to run down this hall with my colleagues,” said Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski. “I wasn’t fully aware of everything that was going on in the building. So when you see all the pieces coming together, just the full awareness of it, the enormity of it, this threat, not just to us in it. as people, as legislators, but the threat to the institution and what Congress represents is worrying. “
The trial resumes at noon Thursday, with Democratic impeachment officials having eight hours to complete their case before Mr. Trump’s legal team begins his defense on Friday.
