Democrats in the House criticized the Trump administration on Monday for its "bizarre and illegal" proposal to release immigrants held in sanctuary cities, and demanded White House and Homeland Security policy documents. set up.
The Democrats also claimed that if it was passed, it would only be for "political purposes".
Speaker of the Judiciary Committee of the House, Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y .; Speaker of the House Oversight Committee, Elijah Cummings, D-Md. and House Homeland Security chairman, Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., wrote a letter to DHS and the White House on Monday asking for emails and other communications between government officials related to proposal.
TRUMP DOUBLE IN PLAN TO TRANSPORT MIGRANTS TO CITIES IN SANCTUARY, SAYS "LEFT RADICALE" SHOULD BE HAPPY
"We are deeply troubled by the many reports, recently confirmed by the President, that the Trump administration is planning to release immigrants held in congressional districts represented by Democrats in a strange and illegal attempt to score political points. ", wrote the presidents.
"Not only does the administration not have the legal authority to transfer detainees in this manner, but it is shocking that the president and senior administration officials even plan to manipulate the release decisions for purely political reasons, "they continued.
The Chairs requested communications, e-mails and other documents regarding the transfer or release of immigrants detained in specific areas of the United States; between DHS officials and officials of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and any other documents related to the proposed policy.
The letter comes after President Trump responded to a Washington Post report last week, almost confirming that the government had offered to release immigrants held in sanctuary towns. The president said the resettlement of illegal immigrants in these districts should make the "radical left" happy.
His comments came after the Post announced that the White House had proposed sending detainees to sanctuary towns twice in the past six months. The proposal had been introduced for the first time in November, when a large caravan of Central American migrants was heading to the southern border. The idea was again examined in February, in the middle of the standoff with Congress in front of a border wall.
The Post said the plan had been shot twice, but last week Trump reported that the proposal was not dead.
"Due to the fact that Democrats are not willing to alter our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as stated, seriously pondering the placement of illegal immigrants in sanctuary cities. only, "said Trump last week. "The radical left still seems to have a policy of open borders, open arms – so that should make them very happy!"
Trump repeated his remarks later in the White House: "We can give them an unlimited supply … see if they have open arms."
The president has doubled his duties while the Democrats were furious over the idea of relocation.
"The extent of the cynicism and cruelty of this administration can not be overstated," said spokeswoman for the House of Representatives House of Representatives of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Ashley Etienne, in a statement Friday. "Using human beings – including small children – as pawns in their twisted game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is odious, and in some cases, criminal."
She added, "The American people have categorically rejected the anti-immigrant toxic policies of this administration, and the Democrats will continue to advance the immigration policies that protect us and respect our values."
PELOSI FUMES OVER WHITE HOUSE: AN IMMIGRANT DETAILED RELEASE PROJECT IN CITIES OF THE SANCTUARY
The district Pelosi – San Francisco – was one of the sanctuary cities in which the administration planned to send detainees.
White House officials, however, pointed out earlier Friday that the plan had never come to fruition. A source close to the talks reportedly told Fox News that Democrats who advocate clemency for illegal immigrants should work with the administration to find ways to transport those to be released, including in their states and districts. .
The proposal was apparently rejected every time the immigration administration agencies presented it.
At this point, it is unclear whether immigration agencies would now support the proposal.
Trump has repeatedly blasted sanctuary towns, areas in which local authorities refuse to cooperate with federal immigration agencies. Cities are usually run by Democrats.
The president was also struck last week by questions about the government's policy of separation of families at the border. Trump said they did not intend to revive the policy, while new speculation about the return of the practice could occur if the staff of the Department of Homeland Security was upset, including the resignation of Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
WHITE HOUSE OFFERS TO RELEASE IMMIGRANT DETAILS IN "CITIES OF THE SANCTUARY" TO TARGE POLITICAL CHALLENGES: REPORT
Kevin McAleenan, who was a CBP Commissioner, replaces her as Acting Secretary.
Nielsen's resignation last Sunday came amid an influx of migrants to the US-Mexico border. Nielsen would have been frustrated by the difficulty of using other ministries to deal with the growing number of families crossing the border. Administration officials, however, told Fox News that McAleenan best responded to Trump's demands of being "the toughest policeman" on the border and that Nielsen was perceived to be resisting some of the immigration measures advocated by the government. President and his associates.
On Tuesday, DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Claire Grady also resigned.
Last Wednesday, Nielsen announced that his acting director, Ron Vitiello, would be leaving by the end of the week.
