Democrats relied on a falsely attributed quote to former President Donald Trump to portray him as pushing election officials to produce evidence of voter fraud during the Senate impeachment process in February.
A Washington Post article that has since been corrected claimed that Trump told Georgian election investigator Frances Watson to “find the fraud” in the state, which he narrowly lost to Joe Biden, and that ‘she would be a “national hero” if she did.

Additionally, the Georgian Secretary of State’s office opened an investigation into Trump’s phone calls to state election officials ahead of the second impeachment attempt in February, ABC7 reported.
However, a new recording of the December 23 call revealed that Trump did not use those words. Instead, Trump said she would be “congratulated” when the “correct answer is given” and encouraged her to take a close look at the mail-in ballots in Fulton County, the heavily Blue County and the most populous state.
The Post published a lengthy correction to its article: “Correction: Two months after the publication of this article, the Georgian Secretary of State released an audio recording of President Donald Trump’s phone call in December with the principal investigator of the state elections. The recording revealed that The Post misquoted Trump’s comments on the call, based on information provided by a source. Trump did not tell the investigator to “ find the fraud ” or says she would be “ a national hero ” if she did. Instead, Trump urged the investigator to take a close look in Fulton County, Ga., saying that she would find “dishonesty” in it. He also told her that she had “the most important job in the country right now.” A story about the recording can be found here. CNN also reported on the call citing an anonymous source and waited until Monday afternoon to correct its story, after initially saying Trump declared “national hero” and “find fraud” in his paragraph d ‘opening.
While the media often cite sources that paraphrase conversations they have participated in or overheard, the use of quotes tells the reader that a subject has said those exact words.
