Former acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker said on Monday that the impeachment of former President Trump “belittles” the impeachment standard.
Whitaker made the comment on “The Faulkner Focus”, adding that it “also distracts Congress right now from what it should be worried about, like stopping the epidemic of violent crime in our big cities, doing more for the challenges of the COVID-19 we are facing. and also so many other things that the people of America want Congress to work for them. ”
Whitaker made the statements the day before the Senate begins an impeachment trial against Trump for the second time after the House voted to impeach the former president last month.

The House voted to impeach Trump with a 232 to 197 vote on the charge of inciting an insurgency, with 10 Republicans joining all Democrats. It would take 17 Republicans joining the 50 Senate Democrats to condemn Trump on the article of impeachment, a highly unlikely outcome.
Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Senator Chris Murphy, D-Conn., Argued that Trump’s impeachment trial “doesn’t stop” the rest of Senate business, as Whitaker believes. Murphy said Sunday that “the Senate can walk and chew gum at the same time.”
Host Harris Faulkner asked Whitaker who the impeachment witnesses were and how long he expects the trial to last.
“Democrats are going to quickly realize that this is a loser for them and they’re going to want to end it as quickly as they want to start it,” Whitaker replied.
He added that “the Chamber should have heard testimony” and “should have heard witnesses”.
“Anything that comes before the Senate in a trial should … have already been considered and be part of the record in the House,” Whitaker added. “It doesn’t exist because it was a rushed indictment and so the Senate will decide quickly, probably tomorrow, whether or not to take witnesses.”

He added that if the Senate decides not to use witnesses, “it will be a very short process.”
