WAshington governor Jay Inslee warned Republicans on Sunday that the Democratic Party would rule according to the standard set by President Trump's emergency declaration for border security, especially on the issue of climate change, if the majority the GOP in the Senate did not fight her.
Trump declared a national emergency on the Mexican border on February 15, after Congress refused to grant him the funding requested for the construction of a wall. Sixteen states, not including Washington, filed a lawsuit last week against the Trump government over the order to divert billions of dollars from the military for the project.
Democrats in the House set a vote Tuesday to advance a resolution rejecting Trump's statement. The measure should move easily to the House controlled by the Democrats. In the Senate, Democrats need four Republicans to pull out of Trump's office. Trump said on Friday that he would oppose "100%" to the measure.
"Republicans have to stand up because they have been sworn in to the Constitution, not to Donald Trump, and overturn that decision," Inslee, a Democrat, told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.
"But if there are new rules, Republicans must understand that Democrats will abide by all the rules, especially with regard to climate change," he said.
Inslee, who has teased a possible campaign by 2020, also said during the interview that he could announce his decision as early as this week.
"People want a president to act on a real emergency, namely climate change," he said. "[Americans] need a president who will rally the country to a clean energy economy, millions of jobs, and save the country from this damage. "
