TAMPA, Florida – The demolition of the University Mall on Fowler Avenue begins Tuesday, February 19 to prepare for the creation of a research park in life sciences and technology, similar to an urban village, called Uptown.
The troubled shopping center, located at 2200 East Fowler Avenue, was built in the 1970s and has been slowly declining. The stores have pulled out due to lower sales or bankruptcy, according to a press release.
RD Management is collaborating with the Tampa Innovation Alliance to breathe new life into this 1,332,205 square foot facility.
"The approximately 100-acre Uptown project will become a multi-storey urban development featuring life science and technology research institutes and complexes, pavilions, offices and and common workspaces, as well as residential and related uses, "said Richard Birdoff, director and president of RD Management.
According to a press release, Birdoff wants to create a similar destination to the renovated Channelside neighborhood of downtown Tampa.
"This is the first step in an ongoing process to pave the way for our Uptown project of about 100 acres," he said. "We are starting on the west side of the property, where we are demolishing an area between the former JCPenney and the existing shopping center.Our plan for this stretch includes the construction of a pedestrian-only street to support the news. catering offerings the former JCPenney of 160,000 square feet on two floors and a technology research complex and class A offices.
