New Denver Broncos general manager George Paton said in his opening remarks announcing his hiring that he planned to be “aggressive but not reckless” in building the roster. Just over a day later, Paton told the team’s website that the Broncos would be “involved in every trade.”
This sets the stage for the latest buzz in Deshaun Watson business rumors. While Watson has yet to officially request a trade from the Texans, ESPN reports that sources close to Houston believe the disgruntled quarterback played his last snap for the team that drafted him No.12 overall in 2017.
This buzz has resulted in punters starting to take serious bets on where Watson could land next – if indeed he is traded. According to SportsBetting.com, the Broncos have a 5/1 odds of landing the triple Pro Bowler which is the fourth best in the NFL.

The teams ranked ahead of Denver in the Watson draw are the New York Jets (2/1), Miami Dolphins (3/1) and Chicago Bears (4/1). Once again, the Broncos rank at No.4 with a 5/1 rating, followed by the Indianapolis Colts at No.5 with an 8/1 rating.
What once looked like a pipe dream at best has suddenly become more and more realistic. Ten days ago, the notion of Texans trading Watson was unthinkable.
After all, the Texans may have had an unforgettable season, but they’re only months away from giving Watson a four-year contract extension worth $ 156 million in new money. He got $ 73.716 million fully guaranteed at signing.
It’s a big commitment to the QB, which made the Houston owner’s behavior all the more confusing. The McNair family have reportedly told Watson that he will be involved in the selection of the Texans’ next general manager and head coach.
Houston hired former Patriots staff czar Nick Caserio, backing the Brinks Truck to make him possibly the highest paid general manager in the NFL. Watson was not consulted on the rental.
That’s what sparked Watson and now the Texans are in deep trouble. Time will tell Houston can save this thing with 25-year-old Watson, but trading it, based on the most recent insider reports, has become a distinct possibility, so much so that punters are taking bets.
Is this level of a successful trade something Paton would come to terms with in his first offseason as GM of the Broncos? I have my doubts, mainly because of the king’s ransom it would take to get Watson out of Houston’s hands.
Paton could check to see what Houston’s demand will be, but suffice it to say that the Broncos should be prepared to not only absorb Watson’s heavy contract, but also abandon the proverbial farm. Such a move would require saying goodbye to at least two first-round draft picks, if not three, and maybe even a pair of seconds.
“You really have to know where you are as a team and that in turn determines your aggressiveness,” Paton told the team’s website last week. “But I think you are involved in every deal that there is and then you can discuss and collaborate and just figure out if you want to take that leap. It’s really important to be involved in everything so that you don’t miss out on a deal that could. so we’re going to be aggressive – involved – but that doesn’t mean we’re going to jump. ”
Meanwhile, Denver insiders like Woody Paige report that Drew Lock will be the Broncos starter again and that John Elway and Vic Fangio are campaigning for Paton to play the game. One more year with Lock under center is the result. final likely, but if Paton looks around the league, spots the 2021 draft class, and ultimately decides Lock is the better option, expect the Broncos to sign a more capable and proven veteran to back him up. to the top.
