The race to open a general manager position for the Denver Broncos is coming together. With the first round of interviews on the books, one contestant graciously pulled out of the race while two others reshuffled favorites to win the post.
At least, that’s according to one of the most successful Broncos insiders out there. Woody Paige from Colorado Springs Gazette – A decades-old Denver insider with close ties to the organization reports new information following the first wave of interviews.
My NFL sources outside of the organization believe the GM will be George Paton or Champ Kelly, both of the NFC North teams – the Vikings and the Bears. Oddly enough, the Broncos would take on the long-suffering Lions for Paton and the equally inept Panthers for Kelly. All three outfits finished 5-11.

Paige’s report is a departure from the last recorded information he left on the matter last week, where he named Kelly and New Orleans Vice President Terry Fontenot as the clubhouse leaders. However, that was before the interviews.
Fontenot has since made his way into GM’s opening with the Atlanta Falcons and is reported as one of the final “two or three” candidates for the job. It’s also worth mentioning that Fontenot’s availability to take over as GM is still at least a week away as the Saints beat the Bears in the Super Wild Card playoff round on Sunday.
Going back to Paige’s reporting, the common theme is Kelly. And with the Bears dropping the playoffs, he’s suddenly available to take on the GM if the Broncos were to offer him.
However, don’t sleep on Paton. The Vikings’ staff maven turned down an interview with Carolina for the role of general manager of the Panthers in order to telegraph to the Broncos his desire to land the Mile High gig.
With Dave Ziegler tipping down to stay with New England, one of the last three outside applicants would be an exciting hire and have more advantages than disadvantages. Kelly feels like the obvious choice, especially given her past ties to work in Denver, including a stretch under former GM John Elway.
But don’t be surprised if Paton lands the job. He would be the predicted dark horse.
