DENVER – As former practice team receiver Kendall Hinton warmed up inside Empower Field at Mile High to start Sunday at Denver Broncos quarterback regular quarterback of the team, Drew Lock, took to social media to apologize for a “ mistake. ” by following the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.
Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles, who were on the training squad, were all taken out of training on Saturday and asked to self-isolate after being named as ‘high-risk’ close contacts from quarterback Jeff Driskel, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
Lock admitted on Sunday that the quarterbacks failed to follow the league’s mask guidelines when the quarterbacks were in a meeting together.
“In a controlled and socially remote area, we let our masking slip away for a limited time. An honest mistake, but I will own it,” Lock written in a statement. “I sincerely apologize and fully understand why these safety precautions are so important. Doing the right thing most of the time is not enough.
“I pray for the health, safety and success of my teammates today. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch next week. Go Broncos.”
Lock, Rypien and Bortles are symptom-free and have tested negative since their last meeting with Driskel on Wednesday. Driskel’s positive test result returned Thursday morning and he was transferred to the reserve / COVID-19 list.
Sunday was the third game Lock has missed this season; he was out for two games (and most of a third) earlier this season with a right shoulder injury.
