The mayor of Denver was forced to apologize after flying to Mississippi to spend Thanksgiving with his family – shortly after urging residents to follow official advice and stay home due to the coronavirus.
Michael Hancock shared Thanksgiving advice on the pandemic on Twitter on Wednesday, advising people to ‘Skip Potatoes, Not Covid’, stay home as much as possible and be sure to ‘avoid travel’ .
About 30 minutes later, according to 9News, the Democrat ignored his own advice, as well as that of city and federal officials, by boarding a plane to spend the holidays with his wife and daughter.
The city of Colorado – which has recorded 34,212 cases and 515 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University – has officially urged residents celebrate Thanksgiving only with immediate members of their household and not traveling.
Dr Anthony Fauci, America’s foremost infectious disease expert, also warned of the dangers of traveling during Thanksgiving.
Hancock apologized and said his decision was ‘born from my heart and not from my head’.
He said, “I fully recognize that I urged everyone to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel… My wife and daughter went to Mississippi, where my daughter recently took a job. As the holidays approached, I decided that it would be safer for me to travel to see them than to bring two of my family back to Denver.
“As a public official, whose conduct is rightly scrutinized for the message he sends to others, I apologize to the people of Denver who view my decision as being at odds with advice to stay home. home for all trips except essential trips.
“I made my decision as a husband and father, and for those who are angry and disappointed, I humbly ask you to forgive the decisions that came from my heart and not from my head.”
Hancock was quickly accused of hypocrisy by angry residents – many of whom had canceled Thanksgiving travel plans – and politicians on both sides of the aisle.
Tay Anderson, Principal of the Denver School Board, tweeted: “Hey America, Denver is looking for a new mayor. (The one who follows their own guidelines regarding Covid). Anyone have any suggestions? “
he added: “How many Denverites wanted to see their families for the holidays?” I know my grandma was sick and we could lose her at any time, but I haven’t been to Kansas because we need to stop the spread!
Brianna Titone, Representative of the Democratic State, declared the mayor a turkey and a “bad example”.
Lauren Boebert, an elected Republican MP who has expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory, wrote: “When Denver Mayor Michael Hancock goes against his own orders, the people of Denver must stop taking orders from Mayor Hancock.”
Other government officials have been criticized for going against their own advice on coronaviruses.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was forced to back down after announcing he would spend Thanksgiving with his mother and daughters in Albany, although he told his constituents to avoid such gatherings.
California Governor Gavin Newsom apologized after attending a friend’s birthday dinner earlier this month, with people outside his home.
