The mayor of Denver has apologized for traveling to Mississippi for Thanksgiving after asking residents of his town to stay home for the holidays.
“I fully recognize that I urged everyone to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel,” Democrat Mayor Michael Hancock tweeted Wednesday.
He said he decided to travel to see his wife and daughter in Mississippi on the grounds that “it would be safer for me to travel to see them than to bring two family members back to Denver.”
He continued, “I admit that my decision disappointed a lot of people who think it would have been better to spend Thanksgiving alone.”

“As a public official, whose conduct is rightly scrutinized for the message he sends to others, I apologize to the people of Denver who view my decision as being at odds with advice to stay home. home for all trips except essential trips.
“I made my decision as a husband and father, and for those who are angry and disappointed, I humbly ask you to forgive the decisions that are made by my heart and not by my head.”
Hancock had tweeted the same day that people should avoid traveling on Thanksgiving.
Her tweet read “Stay home as much as you can, especially if you’re sick”, “Host virtual gatherings instead of in-person dinners” and “Avoid traveling, if you can”.

A representative for Hancock told The Denver Channel that “Upon his return, he will follow all necessary health and safety guidelines and quarantine.”
He also reported that Hancock said at a press conference on Nov. 20 that people should avoid meeting with family members for Thanksgiving and hinted that he would do the same.
“So please, I urge everyone: maybe take a little turkey this year and celebrate with just the host you live with,” he said.
“And after the meal, as we are going to do, Zoom in with your extended family – all your friends, all the people you meet, and tell them that you can’t wait to see them real soon, and that maybe the next year, maybe next year, we can all be together again. “
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended last Thursday that Americans not travel on Thanksgiving. Millions of Americans have traveled anyway.
