YULEE, Florida –A Nassau County MP on Saturday afternoon shot dead a man who pounced on him with a large butcher’s knife in each hand, Sheriff Bill Leeper said.
The deputy was called to a Diamond Street house in Yulee around 1:30 p.m. due to reports that a man was threatening to harm himself, Leeper said.
Leeper said when the deputy arrived he was able to speak with the man through the small window of a side door, but the man became agitated and cursed the deputy, who said he was there to watch him and he just wanted to talk.
Leeper said the man asked the deputy if he was alone. The deputy said he had backup on the way, but just wanted to talk, and the man told the deputy to “get ready” before walking through the door with a large butcher’s knife in each. main, Leeper said.
The deputy told the man to stop, but when the man rushed forward, the deputy shot him, Leeper said. The sheriff’s office declined to provide details on the number of shots fired by the deputy or the number of times the man was shot.

The man died instantly. He was 39 years old.
No one else was inside the house and the deputy was not injured.
“Obviously he was having anger issues and was dealing with a lot of things,” Leeper said of the deceased man.
He said law enforcement had already been called to the man’s home and the man had previously been arrested for violent offenses.
The FDLE will investigate the shooting, and the substitute will be placed on administrative leave and will be assessed before he returns to work.
Leeper said the deputy had been on the job for about nine years and it was his first shot involving an officer.
“You never know when you get a call where you are going. It’s something that turned into something deadly very quickly, ”Leeper said. “Fortunately, the officer was not injured.”
