Derek Carr’s ‘questionable’ status could open door to Nathan Peterman’s return

Prepare for… Nathan Peterman vs. Jacoby Brissett? This not exactly prime-time showdown isn’t impossible after the starting quarterbacks of the Las Vegas Raiders and Miami Dolphins – Derek Carr and Tua Tagovailoa – got injured in their Week 1 game.

After a nasty Week 2 injury we knew Tagovailoa was very uncertain for Sunday’s trip to Las Vegas. But we also didn’t know Carr wasn’t a safe bet to play.

Questionable Derek Carr (ankle) vs. Dolphins

Raiders coach Jon Gruden announced Monday that Carr had undergone an MRI on his bumped ankle. While the results were encouraging, Carr is “questionable” about playing against the Dolphins. Carr didn’t miss a snap on Sunday, and Gruden added that he believes his starting quarterback will finally be available next weekend.

He’s a lot more optimistic than Brian Flores in Miami after Tagovailoa got rocked in the ribs by Bills Edge rusher AJ Epenesa Sunday afternoon. Tagovailoa struggled to get off the pitch and the team carted him to the locker room. Tagovailoa did not return and Flores put him on a day-to-day basis for the Week 3 game against the Raiders.

“He’s a tough kid,” Flores said of Tua. “I would say he’s a very tough kid. Let it be the return of the hip. I think he had a thumb last year he played. He tried to go yesterday. Tenacity is not something we question with him. He will do everything to get back as quickly as possible. I have a lot of confidence in that. No, he’s a tough kid, that’s for sure.

Meanwhile, it looks like the ankle and toe injuries of running back Josh Jacobs will be a ordeal of at least two weeks. Gruden rated Jacobs as “highly questionable” for playing against the Dolphins a day after Jacobs failed to face the Steelers.

Josh Jacobs still sick with questionable label

Jacobs’ injury provided an opportunity for Peyton Barber, who received 13 carries for a meager 32 yards against the Steelers. However, it was more effective than the Kenyan Drake, who had 9 yards in 7 attempts. But he added 46 receiving yards on 5 catches.

Back to the quarterback speech – if Tua can’t go, Brissett will start. And if Carr isn’t available, prepare for the return of Peterman, who hasn’t started a game in almost three years.

Marcus Mariota entered the season as a replacement for Carr, but he is on the injured list with a quad injury. Now that Carr is a little gimpy, the Raiders should at least consider giving some practice reps to Peterman, who is best known for his zero touchdowns and 5 interceptions game for the Bills in 2017. In his career, Peterman has a touchdown – intercept ratio of 1: 4 and a passer rating of 34.0.

In two games this season, Carr completed 66.7% of his passes with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Brissett, meanwhile, has started 32 games for the Patriots and Colts since joining the league in 2016, generating a career passer rating of 83.2. And although he’s technically No. 2 on the Dolphins Depths chart, he considers himself second to none.

“I don’t think of myself as the backup quarterback,” Brissett said after the game on Sunday. “I am a starter.”
