The Tennessee Titans running Derrick Henry weren’t surprised when his high school national record for rushing yards in a game fell on Friday night.
“Florida boys are different,” Henry told reporters Thursday, “so I knew someone would break him up eventually.”
The former Alabama All-American and the 2015 Crimson Tide Heisman Trophy winner ran for 502 yards and six touchdowns on 45 carries in a Yulee High School victory over Jackson in 2012.
Baker High School’s Kayleb Wagner ran for 535 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-48 victory over South Walton in a game between the Florida Panhandle teams on Friday night. Wagner has done spectacularly on the football field even though he was born without a left hand and part of his forearm due to amniotic band syndrome.
“I think it’s amazing,” said Henry. “I thought it was really cool. I got to talk to him a bit on Instagram and hopefully he breaks a bit more. But it’s really cool. Definitely an inspiration to me, and I’m sure he’s an inspiration to his team and everyone out there in this community, so it was really cool to see, and hopefully I can do something about it. for him in the coming weeks. But I like to see it.
Wagner was thrilled to hear the NFL All-Pro.
“We went back and forth for about five minutes,” Wagner said. “He congratulated me, told me he would send me a pair of his crampons and hunting gloves. It was very, very cool. I think it really hit me when I had the record.
Henry said he tried to encourage Wagner.
“I just told him to keep going, to keep working hard, to keep God first, to break more records,” Henry said. “I tried to talk to him to see what I can do for him. It’s a cool situation. He was overtaking the guys; the guys weren’t touching it. It was very cool. Records are meant to be broken, and I hope he will break more.
Wagner helped Baker win the FHSAA Class 1A Championship last season, and he entered Friday night’s game after a 49-13 win over Rocky Bayou Christian in which he ran four times for 267 yards and four touchdowns. .
Against South Walton, Wagner’s 83-yard touchdown run started the scoring, and he hit 91- and 68-yard touchdowns as Baker rallied in the fourth quarter.
Henry still holds the national career high school ground running record with 12,124 yards.
