Derrick Rose “still can’t believe” he’s a Knick again, his first choice, back with Tom Thibodeau and even Knicks senior vice-president William Wesley who was involved in his Memphis appearance. .
And he seemed thrilled to be able to serve as a mentor to Knicks rookie playmaker Immanuel Quickley, his backcourt mate on the bench.
In his first remarks to reporters from the trade, Rose said that after the loss of Miami he was thinking of Quickley’s world.
“It shouldn’t be too difficult with him,” Rose said. “We are similar. He is on a double team in his first year. There aren’t too many recruits who get this kind of attention. For him, seeing this kind of start is just going to improve his game. The game will slow down even more. And he listens. That’s what is most beautiful about him, he listens. With this, you always have room for improvement. It’s a dog. It’s a dog. I can not explain it. You have to be a player to understand it. We are fighting, I know he is fighting. ”
After the morning shoot, Quickley revealed that Rose had spent dinner with him and his fellow rookie Obi Toppin.
“He just stressed me out – first he gave me his number – said whatever I needed, just hit him,” Quickley said. “But he sat down with me a bit, me and Obi actually, he just told us that he was there to help us, he is there to help us grow and things like that. It’s nice to have the chance to talk to him a little bit last night.
Rose reflected on her first stint in New York with Jeff Hornacek and Phil Jackson. Hornacek tried to get Rose to shoot more 3s but he was uncomfortable. Rose said he’s a better 3-point shooter now and hit 2 of 3 in his second debut with the Knicks.
“I was a little stubborn,” Rose said. “They wanted me to like shooting the 3s and all, but I felt like at the end of the year the teams were going to judge me on my effectiveness and efficiency rate. This is one of the reasons I didn’t shoot 3s, and if you looked at the team back then we had Melo [Carmelo Anthony] and KP [Kristaps Porzingis], so I feel like I didn’t have to shoot 3s. My job was to push the ball and make sure they were okay. Years later, I feel like I’m adjusting. … I’m no longer a threat now where you can’t go under the screens anymore. I try to push the ball, and I kind of let the game come to me and I stopped forcing it.
This is now his third stint with Thibodeau.
“It’s family here,” Rose said. “I had Wes here. I have Thibs here. I have everyone I’ve been successful with here laying the groundwork. ”
Several title contenders made offers for Rose, but he confirmed the Post report that the Knicks were his first choice.
“Of course,” Rose said. “Even though I couldn’t tell at the time, I just wanted to be comfortable. I’ve known these guys from high school, eighth, high school. I never really thought of anything else, but really to come here and understand that they wanted me to help grow the young men they already have here. ”
