TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Ron DeSantis is unimpressed with President-elect Joe Biden’s plan to call on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help with the rollout of vaccines in the country.
At a press conference in Cape Coral on Tuesday, DeSantis said Biden’s plan to use the federal disaster agency and the National Guard to build COVID-19 vaccination clinics across the country would be a ” big mistake”.
“I’ve seen some of this stuff that Biden is posting, that he’s going to set up these FEMA camps, I can tell you it’s not necessary in Florida,” he said. “All we need is more vaccine. Just get us more vaccines.
“Trying to reinvent the wheel at this point, I think, would be a big mistake,” added DeSantis. “The more bureaucracy involved in all of this, the worse it’s going to be.”
The comments were the first the Florida governor has made on the incoming administration’s vaccination plans. Unlike President Donald Trump’s approach of letting states distribute the vaccines, which has been slower than expected to receive gunfire, Biden said last week he would speed up the process by appealing to the federal aid.
“Our plan will focus on getting the shots in the arms, including launching a fundamentally new approach, establishing thousands of federally-run or federally-supported community vaccination centers of varying sizes located in places like high school gyms and NFL stadiums, ”Mr Biden said in an interview with WFXE-FM in Columbus, Georgia, according to The New York Times.
DeSantis, a Trump ally, has also faced strong criticism over the state’s slow and confusing vaccine rollout. But he rejected Biden’s idea.
“Think about it: if you come and tell FEMA to set up some type of camp, how long will it take?” Said DeSantis. “And then are you going to divert the vaccines from my efforts here?”
“I’m worried all the more that they’re trying to control the application of it, I think it’s going to be very problematic,” DeSantis added. “They should use their ability and authority to get more vaccines for people.”
DeSantis was initially asked if he had spoken with the Biden administration about the vaccination plan. DeSantis did not say.
“I don’t have any reading about it,” he said.
