Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stepped up his criticism of President Biden’s immigration policy on Monday, warning law enforcement officials had informed him that many migrants he met at the border were bound for his home state .
DeSantis targeted Biden shortly after the governor’s return from a trip to the southern border to support his decision to send law enforcement resources from Florida to Texas to help with the local response to the immigration crisis. DeSantis said he was “surprised” by his discussions with state agents who were sent to the border.
“They’ve made over 2,000 arrests, over 100 felony arrests, and they say almost 70% of all the people they banned said their ultimate destination was the state of Florida,” said DeSantis at a press conference. “If you think that having a border wide open, 1,000 miles, however far it is, doesn’t affect here, you are wrong.”
Statistics cited by DeSantis could not be independently verified. Florida has sent law enforcement officers to the border following a request for help from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey in June.
DeSantis argued that the border crisis would “turn around very quickly” if Biden reinstated the Trump-era policies he overturned by executive order shortly after taking office. He called for the reinstatement of migrant protection protocols, which required asylum seekers to stay in Mexico during their immigration process.
