A standoff is brewing between the Houston Texans and Deshaun Watson, and it doesn’t look like the quarterback is backing down.
Watson removed the term “Texans” from his social media profiles as tensions mounted between him and the franchise. There are still pictures of him in Texan clothing, but he changed his main photo and removed the team affiliation in his bios.
It comes after new chief executive Nick Caserio made it clear in Friday’s press conference that the franchise has “no interest in negotiating it.”
“I just want to reiterate our commitment to Deshaun Watson,” Caserio said. “We have no interest in trading the player. We have a great plan and vision for him. We can’t wait to spend more time with him.”
New Texans head coach David Culley reiterated the sentiment.
“He’s a Texan from Houston,” Culley said. “I want him to be a Houston Texan. The reason I’m in this job today is because I know he’s going to be a Houston Texan.”
The triple Pro Bowler reportedly asked to be traded several weeks ago. However, the news broke a day after the Texans announced they had hired Ravens’ assistant David Culley to be their new head coach on Wednesday.
The 2020 season was chaotic for the Texans, who finished last in the AFC South at 4–12 and faced significant organizational instability. Watson was unhappy with his lack of input into Houston’s head coach and general manager research, in which he had been promised to participate.
Even with all the frustrations and the best players traded around him, Watson had his best statistical year this season, totaling 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns.
Watson made the changes on social media just hours after rumors surfaced that teammate JJ Watt might not be back with Houston next season.
