One of Robert Saleh’s former defensive stars is pleading for Deshaun Watson to find his way to the Jets.

“If I were Deshaun, I would get out of there as fast as I could. I would head to New York. … The Jets, ”49ers cornerback Richard Sherman said in“ The Cris Collinsworth Podcast, ”which Sherman co-hosts.

“It would be the most beautiful. Decent offensive line. They should find threats, they should find offensive weapons, but I think there would be a lot more people excited to be there. I think the free will market this year is going to be oversaturated because of the salary cap, but that’s what I would do. I would be out of there on the first thing to smoke.

Watson, 25, got his third straight Pro Bowl nod in 2020 after scoring a best 4,823 NFL yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions, as well as 444 rushing yards and three rushing scores. He has played in all but one of the games in the past three seasons, although he has been sacked 155 times during that time.

And yet the Texans have taken a huge step back and gone 4-12 this season. After a misguided trade in the last offseason that sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals, Bill O’Brien was fired as coach and general manager after a 0-4 start.

Watson’s frustration “was on a 2 then I took it to 10,” he tweeted last week, almost verbatim confirming an ESPN report, it was his level of anger between the Hopkins trade and now. He wanted comments on the Texans’ searches for a general manager and head coach.

But the team dragged their feet in arranging an interview with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, whom Watson has heard good things about from Patrick Mahomes. Then the team hired the Patriots’ Nick Caserio as general manager instead of the finalists recommended by Korn Ferry, Omar Khan of the Steelers and Louis Riddick of ESPN, a move that had much maligned fingerprints from executive Jack Easterby everywhere. .

“They say [Watson is] not answering calls or texts – neither would I, ”Sherman said. “He did everything. He took a beating for you guys and played efficiently.

Watson offered some hope to Jets fans by liking an Instagram post that featured the last page of the “Watever It Takes” Post advocating that the Jets go after the quarterback.

Sherman has been delighted with Saleh since the Jets hired him and seems to think a Saleh-Watson marriage would bring the Jets back into the fight.

“Great pickup!” Sherman had already told Saleh’s MMQB. “He’s going to change this whole culture!”
