Deshaun Watson appears to have reached a boiling point when it comes to the Houston Texans. Shortly after Texans owner Cal McNair publicly stated (among others) that Jack Easterby would remain the team’s vice president of football operations, Watson posted a Twitter message indicating his level of frustration with the team. regard to the franchise.
Watson’s tweet confirmed a recent report ESPN’s Adam Schefter saying Watson’s anger level hit a “10” – it was previously at “a 2” after the team traded All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals last offseason.
“I was on 2 then I raised it to 10,” Watson tweeted Friday afternoon.
In addition to confirming that he will not be parting ways with Easterby, McNair told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle that he wants Watson to be part of the process regarding the team’s next head coach. McNair also said he texted his Pro Bowl quarterback. The two did not communicate when Watson was recently on vacation.
“It’s no secret that he’s disappointed with the (lack of) communication during the hiring process,” McNair said of Watson not participating in the GM team’s hiring. Nick Caserio, via NFL.com.
Watson and Andre Johnson were supposed to be included in the Texans’ hiring process for a new general manager and head coach. Watson, Johnson, team chairman Jamey Rootes, and research firm Korn Ferry were also supposed to help McNair as he began filling those vacancies.
While those mentioned above were supposed to have a voice in the recruiting process, things quickly took a turn for the worse, according to Jason La Canfora, a CBS Sports NFL insider. McNair hired Caserio while talks were still ongoing, according to La Canfora. Candidates who were still waiting to be interviewed never got the chance.
McNair’s actions are clearly not suited to Johnson, the seven-time Pro Bowl receiver and the first player to be inducted into the Texans’ Ring of Honor. Johnson, via Twitter, sent a message to Watson on Tuesday, who is reportedly considering waiving the no-trade clause that is currently in his contract.
“If I am @deshaunwatson I will hold my position. The Texas organization is known to have ruined the careers of players. Since Jack Easterby entered the building, nothing good has happened in / for the organization. and for some reason someone can’t seem to see what’s going on. Pathetic !!! “
Hopkins, who continued to play at the Pro Bowl level with the Cardinals, responded to Johnson’s comments.
“When Dre talks, listen,” Hopkins wrote via Twitter.
A member of the Texans’ organization since 2019, Easterby was promoted to vice president of football operations last February. Easterby spent six seasons in New England with Caserio, who has spent the past 13 years as director of player personnel for the Patriots.
Amid mounting speculation that Easterby had left, McNair ended those rumors on Friday.
“Jack’s review is really unwarranted,” McNair said. “Jack was placed in that role that the organization needed for me. If any missteps were made during this process, we will have them in our building. Jack (will return) to the role he was brought in here and in. what he grew up after going there. “
Watson is still angry with Texans’ insensitivity to social justice, including the hiring practices of team, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported Sunday. Specifically, Watson was upset after the Texans failed to conduct an interview with current Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy. Watson is reportedly considering giving up his no-trade clause to travel to Miami as part of a deal that would include current Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Watson isn’t the only Texas star to be upset by the team’s current state. Three-time Defensive Player of the Year, JJ Watt was overheard apologizing to Watson at the end of the team’s Week 17 loss to the Titans.
“I’m sorry we wasted one of your years,” Watt said the 25-year-old quarterback.
After two straight playoff seasons, the Texans have won just four games in 2020. Despite the team’s lack of success, Watson led the NFL with 4,823 passing yards. He also completed 70.2% of his passes with 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while winning his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
While he has not publicly addressed the current rumors surrounding Watson, Caserio said Watson was “our quarterback” when he addressed the media on January 8. McNair also offered his support to Watson on Friday.
“I have watched Deshaun since playing Clemson,” McNair said. “I believe he can win championships here. We believe in him. He’s a great person and a Texan. He’s our quarterback.”
