In the aftermath of news that disgruntled Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will be traded to the Colts, Texas quarterback Deshaun Watson’s personal trainer posted a question on Twitter.
“What are the criteria for a quarterback asking to be traded, then effectively traded? Quincy Avery posted. “Ask a friend.”
Indeed, it is. Watson, like Wentz, wants a fresh start. Wentz has one. Watson, so far, is not.
The situations are however different. Wentz has had a horrific 2020 and the Eagles have given over $ 40 million in guarantees over the next two years. The Eagles also have Jalen Hurts, who looks set to take over the starting position.
Watson, on the other hand, played like one of the best quarterbacks in football last year, even though the rest of the squad didn’t. He is in the early years of a long-term and generous extension. The cap and cash fees, especially in 2021, are more than manageable. Watson is only making $ 10.54 million in base salary this year, and his cap will only be $ 15.94 million. (That changes in a year, when Watson has a fully guaranteed salary of $ 35 million.)
There is another difference. The Eagles seem to understand how to craft a plan that promotes their general best interests. Texans don’t. Frankly, the Texans seem determined to draw a line in the sand just because they can. It certainly won’t give them the best possible return when Deshaun inevitably gets what he wants.
