CASTLE ROCK, Colorado – Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy
recently said her response to cancer treatments was "staggering"
and better than expected.
Unfortunately, not all families share the same joy.
Ron Bisbee was diagnosed with an aggressive form of multiple myeloma a few months ago. Today, the father of three and his family do their best to stay positive, close and anticipate a ruthless illness.
"It's difficult," said Ron's wife, Jen Bisbee. "But we are just trying to stay busy and stay optimistic."
At first, Ron was simply attributing his shoulder pain to an old injury.
"I thought I had a torn rotator cuff," Ron said.
"He was a (baseball) pitcher in the day," said Jen, "and I already knew -" Oh, you're just going to need a surgery. "It does not matter. "
Jen is a nurse herself at UCHealth and she knew it did not matter.
"He started complaining mainly about shoulder pains," Jen said.
But then it turned into pain elsewhere.
"He started walking in a fun way," Jen said, "he had some kind of hip pain, so well, then the medical assistant came to pick me up and she asked me," Why do not you come here? you do not go to the rendezvous? "
This is the moment when this couple – with such optimism, Glass has a half-full vision of the world – was diagnosed change their world.
"The worst news in history," Jen said.
Ron has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an extremely rare cancer that affects only 200,000 people in the United States each year.
"We're starting to get the feeling that everyone lives and I'm here a little bit," Ron says.
"There is no cure," Jen said.
After several chemotherapy sessions and additional tests, UCHealth doctors say Ron is aggressive. It's in his shoulder, bone marrow, and worse, his brain.
"We gave him two years to live," Jen said. "His myeloma surpasses chemo. I tell you. It's just coming back and coming back and coming back. "
"I have the impression that my speech is scrambled," Ron says. "It was a bit difficult for me."
Ron's family and Jen's family have intensified their efforts. The same goes for the community. The Bisbee say that they are overwhelmed by meals, gifts and love.
"I just want to say," Thank you! "From the bottom of my heart for the support of all," said Jen.
And through all this, this couple continues.
"I've always said, better than me or Jen or the kids, that's for sure," Ron says. "(Jen's) like, I mean, I feel that it has brought us much closer."
