Despite the 4th of July on National Mall, the real fireworks are in Congress

Who needed a big firework display on Independence Day in Washington, while the American political system is only a powder keg, ready to explode?

Some Democratic members of Congress described the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) as a "dummy agency". CBP employees have issued insulting and vilest messages about representatives. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., and Veronica Escobar, D-Texas.

The public is so polarized that it can not even agree to cheer on the US women's football team in Sunday's World Cup final. Some people like Megan Rapinoe. Some do not do it. That's because she got into trouble with President Trump during a visit to the White House and had a knee to the national anthem.

Some even wonder if American footballers – or other athletes – should no longer wear Nike shoes.

Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo., Criticized Nike on Twitter for using "sweatshops" and "taking advantage of our laws." He added that "Nike is anti-American".

Nike employs several hundred people in two Missouri institutions.

The Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Said he would buy the first pair of shoes if Nike or another company decided to publish them.

Of course, not many people have ever seen McConnell in sneakers.

Then, the left replied that the right was more worried to desecrate the flag on the shoes than the hygiene of the children of migrants held in detention centers.

Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun all hear better.

There are tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles in downtown Washington on the 4th. Confusion among 4th of July party revelers about the annual "The Fourth Capitol" concert on the Capitol's West Lawn and "Salut à l ' President's America, 3.5 km from Lincoln Memorial.

And after? A whole warehouse of Jim Beam stocked with 45,000 barrels of bourbon burning on the ground just before July 4th? What could be worse? A whole rickhouse storing 477,000 gallons of bourbon collapsing on July 4th at the Barton distillery of 1792?

It is as if everything that took place around July 4th was emblematic of the deep political divisions of the country. No wonder people prefer to focus on a breathless coverage, minute by minute, showing where Kawhi Leonard could play basketball next year.

And for the record, Leonard played last season in Canada.

All of this has real implications of expectations and realpolitik on Capitol Hill.

Senator David Perdue, R-Ga., And 14 other Republican Senators sent a letter to Mick Mulvaney, Acting Chief of Staff of the White House, urging them to enter into a two-year spending agreement to protect the army. But Republicans must seal this deal with the Democrats. Democrats are willing to spend a little more on the military, but not as much as the Trump administration and some GOPers want. Republicans will have to reach an agreement with the Democrats – and get President Trump to agree to this deal.

Meanwhile, liberal Democrats are not very interested in relations with Republicans. The suspicions were already deep before visits to detention centers and the mishap over the bill of additional spending at the border. In fact, the Democrats are already arguing over whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should have accepted a bipartisan Senate bill or moved toward a more liberal measure supported by the Democrats.

This is the problem facing the Democrats. There is a push to the left for great things like medicare for all – but no clear legislative strategy to achieve these goals. Of course, the course requires working with Republicans and President Trump. This means that Liberal Democrats can get a few things that they want but far from everything.

Senators Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. And Ocasio-Cortez did not respond directly to the questions asked on Capitol Hill two weeks ago on the implementation of a plan to eliminate more than $ 1 trillion in student debt. Sanders also said that those who would tell them not to push for such a drastic plan include those who told them that it was acceptable to "bail out the banks."

Sanders refers to TARP – the program of help in case of loss of resources. A democratic House and Senate adopted this plan in the fall of 2008 to deal with a financial meltdown at the national level. No member of either party or the other was happy with the agreement. But congressional leaders at the time were Pelosi and former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

That's the problem of Democrats. The base of their party seeks perfection. But there is no legislative way to get there. They are not interested in small or half-buns. This approach lacks pragmatism – and is probably not very successful. No wonder McConnell and the minority leader in the House, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., Spend their day trying to portray all Democrats as "socialists" and leftists.

Meanwhile, congressional Republicans have entered the era of President Trump. Many Capitol Hill GOPers have long since abandoned some of the party's main principles, such as deficit reduction. Those who criticized President Obama for dealing with dictators applaud Mr. Trump as he crosses the demilitarized zone to snuggle up against North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. McConnell and other Republicans often avoid questions about the president's conduct and rape charges. But the GOPers have never given up on the behavior of President Clinton when he was in power.

Congressional Republicans may be willing to forgive the president on many fronts, even while watching conveniently. But the GOPs know that Mr. Trump will be the Republican candidate next year, barring unforeseen circumstances. So they are willing to let a lot of things flow, because they will also be on the ballot. A large number of re-elected legislators represent districts and states where the president remains popular. So, as long as the Democrats turn left, they repeat that they are the voice of reason in Central America.

This is why Democrats and Republicans can not meet. And the teams are constantly diverted for problems such as tennis shoes.
