‘Destiny 2’ hires staff for massive universe expansion in film and TV

While that has been pretty clearly Bungie’s goal for a while, to bring the Destiny universe to more mediums than just video games, now they’re explicitly spelling things out in new job postings meant to make things happen. this dream come true.

Spotted by TheGamePost, Bungie has a new roster among its dozens of open positions for a developing senior executive in film, television and transmedia. And that’s exactly what it sounds like. Here’s the position, and how it relates to the Destiny universe:

“Reporting to the Executive Creative Director of Destiny Universe, you will lead projects that expand the Destiny franchise into new categories including TV, movies, books, comics and audio formats. As the storyteller and “Guardian” of the Destiny IP, you will identify, select, guide, collaborate and provide feedback to third parties and partners enabling them to tell additional myths in the Destiny universe that delight our fans while capturing the hearts and minds of new audiences.

I believe the “Executive Creative Director of Destiny Universe” is Luke Smith now after he and Mark Noseworthy moved beyond oversight of the games. Bungie also recently hired a former CBS executive to its board, and it’s clear that multimedia is a big future for the franchise.

We don’t know which direction this will take, but the idea is presumably “all of the above”. We only saw tiny expansion pieces of Destiny in the past in things like the occasional comic book or Grimoire Anthologies bringing together the lore of the game. But clearly, the goal is to produce something on a large scale.

The biggest option, of course, would be some sort of live action, big-budget hit movie series, or TV series. A few years ago we might have put this in the ‘oh no, another terrible video game adaptation to come’ category, but there has been a change where everyone is jostling for a game or content. inspired by the game. Netflix has The Witcher (yes, adapted from books, but influenced by games) and HBO is investing an astonishing amount of money in its adaptation of The Last of Us.

Going down the “ladder” scale, a common idea is that Destiny could do an anime adaptation instead, which could still be very high quality, with the gold standard being the adaptation of the animated game Castlevania which is. became one of Netflix’s best series.

As for the books? I’m just saying that I know at least a sci-fi author who would love to write something set in the Destiny universe. Someone who also writes articles about the game every day. It’s me, the someone is me. But more seriously, it’s easy to see how the universe of Destiny could expand with real novels set in the past and present of the franchise. A common thought every time it comes up is how numerous potential stories could be adapted for multimedia, outside of games, and I think most people somehow assume that all of Destiny’s media projects would probably be not directly adapting the games (imagine starting with the chopped vanilla story from Destiny 1, there’s just no way). The list seems to indicate that saying it would be “additional myths in the universe of Destiny”.

I thought we might have a match on Destiny’s future media plans on the Witch Queen show, but that didn’t happen, so we’re going to have to wait a bit longer. And clearly, they’re still recruiting to make this happen, so it may be a bit before there’s anything official announced, and even with my ear to the ground, I don’t. haven’t heard anything yet about what they could work on. Anyway, I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
