Destiny 2the mission of the final story of for the gluing season dropped today, and while it mostly ends as players expected, it does have a few cool little surprises, including teasing the possible return of one of the game’s most awkward characters.
Slight spoilers follow.
The epilogue of the season of the Splicer, “As Prophesied,” dropped into today’s weekly reset, and to get the full, pure experience you should really play it first. In it, you fight to shut down a Vex portal opened in the Last City by the Cult leader of Future War, Lakshmi-2. While the mission plays out like your standard Override race, browse the map and you’ll find a few more details, including a Vex Harpy hovering casually over a workstation set up just outside the combat arena.

Your first clue that this isn’t just any ordinary enemy is the fact that you can’t kill it. The Harpy Also beeps at you in strange patterns. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then Destiny players will likely translate it into Morse code. This is exactly what they started to do on the Subtitle Raid Secrets, and down-and-behold, the Harpy calls you “assistant”, Asher Mir’s familiar nickname for the player’s keeper. Yes, it certainly looks like the Awoken Warlock has returned from the brink of oblivion by uploading its consciousness into an alien robot.
To recap: Asher Mir was the planetary vendor of Io and a Vex researcher who was infected with Vex technology during a previous mission. When the mysterious giant pyramids arrived last year, he found himself on the front lines trying to unlock their secrets. Rather than retreat from Io before Darkness could take him, he descended into a Vex Lake just before it was destroyed, officially leaving him “MIA”. Like all other characters and worlds Bungie cut from Destiny 2 With the Beyond Light expansion arriving last November, it wasn’t clear if players would ever hear Asher complaining about their sloppy work and silly tactics.
But then a funny thing happened earlier this season. A bunch of Future War Cult weapons have been added to the game, each with flavor text hinting at Lakshmi-2’s visions of the future. One of these weapons in particular, the stochastic variable submachine gun, specifically referred to Asher. “The Eliksni Quarter: A Crackling Portal: Asher Speaks: Fallen Being Attacked: Dead Orbit Above: Saint-14 Under Siege: FWC Surrenders—” the caption reads. Destiny 2Since then, the most obsessed gamers have been waiting to find out exactly what that means.
After a few very long months, it now seems that they have their answer. Whether Bungie plans to bring Asher back in sustainable form remains to be seen. Does that mean Asher will have a role to play in the coming year? I hope so. It even gave me hope that we might hear from Destiny 2other MIA NPCs like Sloane. The story of the game has always blossomed in the recesses of its giant world, where the ambient chatter of the characters and the opaque drops of knowledge could take on a life of their own. Asher Mir and Destiny 2other suppliers played a big role, and I would love to See them return somehow as Bungie rolls out the big Witch Queen expansion of 2022 in the months to come.
Correction – 5:26 PM ET, 10/8/21: It was a Harpy, not a Hydra.
