The mystery at the center of detective Pikachu concerns the protagonist Tim and his friend Pikachu throughout the city of Ryme, as they try to find out what happened to Harry Goodman, Tim's detective father. Things get a bit confusing as the movie progresses. Tim and Pikachu, as well as journalist Lucy and her partner Psyduck, discover a strange laboratory. It turns out that Howard Clifford, the founder of Ryme City, has captured and studied the powerful psychic Pokemon Mewtwo in this lab to uncover the secrets of Pokemon's evolution. In their work on Mewtwo, scientists discovered two things: the strange chemical substance R that is the key to the mystery and a Mewtwo power that no one knew before.
At the apogee of the film, Tim discovers the truth about what is happening: Howard is obsessed with the evolution of Pokemon and wants to find a way for humans to evolve to better versions of them. same. He intends to defeat his degenerative disease (and become the ultimate Pokemon fan) by using the newly discovered power of Mewtwo to transfer his mind into the body of a Pokémon. Yup, his plan is to take back the body of a cartoon animal endowed with magical powers.
Howard does not only plan for Pokémon himself, though. It also transfers everybody mind in their Pokemon, too. Why would he want to do that? This is a very good question. Whatever it is, let's continue.
As Howard explains to Tim, there is an obstacle to the transfer of humans into their Pokémon: this can only happen when the Pokémon are in a wild and crazy state. This is the real reason for the chemical substance R: R makes Pokemon lose control of itself and, in doing so, loses its sentience. When the chemical fears Pokemon, it leaves them open to mind transfer.
The fact is that Mewtwo does not really want to cooperate with this plan. He escaped from the lab at the beginning of the film, with the help of Harry Goodman and his Pikachu. When the police fled, Howard sent his Genetically Modified Greninja Pokemon to attack Harry, causing his car to crash and leaving him dead. Mewtwo, grateful for the help of Harry and Pikachu to escape them, came to their aid and Pikachu proposed to let Harry's spirit grab his body to save the body. Harry's life after the accident.
That's why Detective Pikachu can talk throughout the movie. (Why can he only talk to Tim, maybe it's some kind of father-son kinship? Let's just go.) That also explains Detective Pikachu's amnesia and the reason he does not remember how to use his Pikachu powers. Throughout the movie, Detective Pikachu is actually Harry, who does not remember being human.
When Tim and Inspector Pikachu find Mewtwo in the middle of the film, they accidentally drag Howard (and his name, his son Roger) directly to the powerful psychic Pokemon. Howard picks up Mewtwo and uses a special helmet on the Pokémon that allows him to take control of Mewtwo with his mind. Then Howard distributes the chemical R that he hid in the balloons of the Pokemon parade, zapping all the Pokémons in the city and driving them crazy. Finally, he uses the powers of Mewtwo to transfer all the spirits of humans into their Pokémon.
Fortunately, chemical R does not affect Detective Pikachu because he already had Harry's mind in him. This allows detective Pikachu to fight Howard as a Mewtwo and win. This allows them to break Howard's control over Mewtwo.
Once the plot is discovered and Mewtwo is back to normal, he uses his powers to undo everything that Howard did, separating all human minds from Pokémon and bringing everyone back to normal , including Harry.
In the end, Howard Clifford is arrested for his plot to turn an entire city into a Pokemon body, Mewtwo wins his freedom and Tim and Harry reconcile. Everything is packed, with the exception of a few hanging wires, like what happened to this huge genetically modified Torterra that could annihilate the city of Ryme with a fart, or those genetically modified Greninja that have repeatedly tried to Murder people on Howard's orders? And where does Mewtwo go with the power to turn people into Pokemon? Could he zap the minds of people he does not like about anything else, like rocks, trees or lamps?
Maybe these are cases for Harry, Tim and Pikachu to solve later. Fortunately, before anyone is killed, accidentally or deliberately, or transformed into furniture.
