Detective Pikachu: Guide to the work of each Pokémon

The bulk of the action in Detective Pikachu takes place in Ryme City, a new place in the Pokémon world, where fighting is forbidden and where Pokémon live alongside their human counterparts. Most humans have a Pokémon buddy – the Pikachu with their ketchum of ashes, except that all fight to death.

Instead of fighting, Pokémon contribute to society by working alongside humans! Some work directly as partners, such as our lovely detective Pikachu and Tim's father Harry, while other Pokémon seem to contribute to society on their own terms.

Finding the way by which adored Pokémon have lived and worked alongside humans has proven to be an interesting task, said screenwriter Dan Hernandez.

"I think at one point, someone he said, does Squirtle have a strategy?" Are Squirtles able to develop strategies at a higher level? Said Hernandez. "So there were discussions about things like, which Pokemon would work together? Which ones would not work with that? Would this Pokémon work in an office building? Well, actually, Pokemon would not work in an office with all that, because XYZ … "

Around the city

At the beginning of the film, a strong and capable Machamp helps people, as well as Pokémon, navigate the busy streets of Ryme City by serving as a border crossing. The cause of this traffic jam is a Snorlax on standby. It's a cute little scene, but it also immediately establishes the nature of the city of Ryme and the Pokémon world as a whole – especially for Pokémon newcomers.

"We really wanted to weave organically in all these [Pokémon] and make it something everyone understands and has lived, and it was almost a mundane part of life in Ryme, which actually highlighted how special it was. But these people are not so disturbed by Snorlax, which causes a traffic jam, "Hernandez told us.

Tim goes to his father's building, where a sleeping Treecko clings to the reception window. We do not know Treecko's exact role in building management, but Treecko is capable of resizing vertical walls and clinging to ceilings, which would probably be useful for anything that needs fixing. According to the entry of Treecko in Pokedex Pokemon X, his tail can feel the changes of time. Useful for planning building renovations.

Speaking of construction, at the beginning of the Ryme City sequence, we see a noble Braviary taking flight, holding a purse in his claws. In fact, he gives the scholarship to a construction worker in charge of a crane.

There is also a group of Squirtle firefighters seen in a news video. In the anime, Ash's Squirtle joins his troubling former squirtle team as they reform and become firefighters. The anime featured an entire episode about Squirtle and his evolutions as a firefighter.

The police station

The Ryme City Police Station appears to be a major source of employment at Pokemon. When Tim visits the city, we see a group of Growlithe and Arcanine outside the station. In the anime, the characters of officer Jenny are regularly accompanied by Growlithe. Seeing the types of canine shots on the case is an appropriate tribute to the world of Pokemon. But in addition to Growlithe and Arcanine, we also see Golurk prowling outside the station. According to the Pokedex, Golurk was created to protect people and Pokémon. It is therefore logical that they engage in the police.

Detective Hideo Yoshida, Ken Watanabe's character, is associated with a Snubbull. We also see agents coming in with Squirtle and Charmander.

In the press room

Lucy and her Psyduck work in a busy newsroom, where we see Pokemon involved in every aspect of the press life. An Octillery uses a camera, while a Rufflet participates in other activities of the newsroom.

Later, a Squirtle assists a janitor spitting water so that the janitor can clean a bazaar. Choking is also present in the newsroom, sitting near the snack table. Does Slaking help with restoration? The Pokémon is notoriously lazy, except in search of food, so he may have turned that passion into work.

Food and entertainment

In a busy outdoor market, filled with food stalls, we see two Pokemon stands, such as Pancham and Octillery. Although the Pokedex has always been an octillery (the Octillery ink is apparently used in cooking, depending on its entry into Ultra Moon), Hernandez says that the process has generally worked from Pokémon to employment, and not from employment at Pokémon.

"It was more like trying to refine, okay, what is the most sensible place for Octillery? Octillery has a really fun part of the movie. I think he's throwing ramen, "said Hernandez. "And that was the kind of thing we were trying to understand. Like Charmander as the hot plate of the movie night market. This is the kind of stuff we really have tried to fine tune with The Pokémon Company. They have been fantastic throughout the process. "

Tim and Inspector Pikachu meet at a café open late at night (with a Noctowl mascot) where a Ludicolo serves as a barista. Ludicolo engages in rhythmic dance when he hears live music, so he is probably not available for open coffee evenings. There is also the question of Jigglypuff in the cafe. There does not seem to be any work, for example, but he wears a microphone and could therefore be an artist on the road.

The underground combat network fights Pokémon against Pokémon, but the Loudred have a more creative job of helping DJs pump sick beats.

We do not know if Mr. Mime to whom Tim and Detective Pikachu confront each other is the same Mr. Mime as the one advertised in the marquee of a theater on the movie poster, but it remains that there is a Mime show and only one night – how many Pokémon are stars in this world? Is it a single show or is Mr. Mime using other Pokémon?
