Detective Pikachu stars Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who lends his vocal talents to the main character, but he had a very different direction in his vocal style. His idea was to give him the style of the film noir, a genre known for his monologues and his fatalism.
Reynolds described his rendition of The Tonight Show (via THR) as "Who Framed Roger Rabbit Had a Baby with Blade Runner". But this concept was quickly rejected. He described the studio's reaction as follows: "Or maybe just Ryan Reynolds … maybe shut up and do something else."
It seems that the actor is happy that his voice has made the film so cheerful and brilliant, however. He said that he was happy that a movie "just a great adventure" was out right now because "the news these days is like you're pouring hot lemon juice in your eyes. " Evocative!
Detective Pikachu tells the story of a teenager (Judge Smith) of the Pokemon world who travels to Ryme to put order in the affairs of his deceased father. He meets the former detective partner of his father, a talking Pikachu (Reynolds) that only he can understand, and they embark on an adventure to solve the mystery of his father's death.
The reviews are relatively positive, though critics seem to agree that fans of the venerable franchise will reap more. The GameSpot review concluded that, against all odds, Pokemon live-action works.
"Detective Pikachu should appeal to all Pokémon fans, young and old," wrote Michael Rougeau. "It presents amusing answers to the fantasy of what life would be like if Pokemon were real, it introduces new wrinkles into the world of Pokemon, even if they do not all work perfectly, yet as the first official trip in the world. Detective Pikachu, from Pokémon, presents the characters I want to see again and a scene I would like to come back to. "
