The detective who was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald after his assassination by Jack Ruby died at the age of 99. James Leavelle died Thursday in a hospital in Denver. The former Dallas inspector responsible for the Dallas homicide was handcuffed to Oswald when he was taken to a basement of the police station on November 24, 1963, two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy . Ruby, owner of a nightclub, came out of the crowd and fired a fatal blow against Oswald. The moment was captured in one of the most famous photographs of all time that shows Leavelle in his white stetson reacting in shock. Leavelle later related that he had told Oswald a few moments before filming: "If anyone pulls on you, I hope that he will succeed as well as you." Oswald replied, "You are melodramatic."
