DETROIT (AP) – A 9-year-old girl from Detroit was killed after being attacked by three dogs while she was cycling down an alley near her home.
Detroit Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood said the neighbors had tried to stop the attack on the girl Monday afternoon without success. The police did not identify the victim, who was taken to the Michigan Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
In a statement, the Detroit Department of Health, which oversees the city's animal control unit, said two of the dogs had been recovered by their owner. According to the ministry, officials are seeking a court order to seize the animals, which police have described as a pit bull or a pit bull mix.
However, an emergency responder from the Detroit Fire Department said one of the injured appeared to have been shot by a neighbor. Police and animal control officials did not immediately confirm his death.
