Detroit Lions promote OT Dan Skipper, DT Frank Herron of practice squad

The Detroit Lions made some minor moves on Saturday in preparation for their Week 10 game against the Washington soccer team, and they could hint at some key injury situations for the game.

The team announced on Saturday afternoon that they were promoting offensive tackle Dan Skipper and defensive tackle Frank Herron from the practice squad. They do so under this year’s new rules that allow teams to temporarily add players to the training squad’s 53-player roster without having to make a corresponding move. Skipper and Herron will both return to the practice squad after Sunday’s game.

Skipper’s promotion can say something about the availability of Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who has suffered a foot injury for most of the season. Vaitai missed Wednesday’s practice and, as he returned Thursday and Friday, media in attendance reported that he was not doing much. If Vaitai can’t go, Tyrell Crosby would likely start on the right tackle, and Skipper would provide an emergency option should Detroit sustain an injury in play.

As for Herron, his promotion may be linked to the availability of Nick Williams. Williams has a shoulder injury and did not train on Friday. Prior to Herron’s promotion, the Lions had just three healthy defensive tackles on the roster: Danny Shelton, John Penisini and Da’Shawn Hand. Herron gives them some extra depth in case Williams can’t make it on Sunday.

Herron has only made three career appearances at the NFL level. In the Lions’ final three games of the 2019 season, Herron recorded rotation shots on the defensive tackle, totaling six tackles.
