Detroit Lions set to hire Dave Fipp as special teams coordinator

As Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press first reported and later corroborated by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Detroit Lions will hire Dave Fipp as their next special teams coordinator.

The Philadelphia Eagles, who had employed Fipp as their special teams coordinator for the past eight seasons, initially turned down the Lions’ request to interview Fipp, but with Philly facing a regime change on their own, it appears that ‘They let Fipp go, and Detroit jumps at the chance.

Fipp has been on the NFL’s special training teams since 2008, when he started as an assistant with the 49ers. It was his next step – two years with the Miami Dolphins from 2011-2012 – in which he straddled current Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

Here’s a look at some of Fipp’s unit stats since getting the full-time role with the Eagles in 2013.

Special team DVOA rankings, and Rick Gosselin end-of-year ranking

2013: 25th in the DVOA, 19th in the Gosselin classification
2014: 1st in the DVOA, 1st in the Gosselin ranking
2015: 10th in DVOA, 5th in Gosselin ranking
2016: 2nd in the DVOA, 1st in the Gosselin ranking
2017: 16th in the DVOA, 13th in the Gosselin classification
2018: 15th in the DVOA, 14th in the Gosselin ranking
2019: 19th in the DVOA, 15th in the Gosselin standings
2020: 22nd in the DVOA, 17th in the Gosselin standings

As you can see, there was a three-year period in which the Eagles arguably had the best special teams units soon after hiring Fipp. However, over the past four years this unit has slowly slipped towards the average.

Fipp will replace Brayden Coombs, who was sacked mid-season after calling a false punt without consulting the rest of the coaching staff. His mid-season replacement, Marquice Williams, was hired as the special teams coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons earlier this month. In 202, the Lions special team units finished 11th in the DVOA and third in the Gosselin standings.
