Detroit Police make arrest, will close banquet hall after 1 dead, 5 injured in nighttime shooting

DETROIT – Detroit Police said they made an arrest and planned to close a problematic banquet hall after one person was killed and five others were injured in a night shoot.

Acting Detroit Police Chief Jacques Blanc said three men and three women, aged 26 to 46, were gunned down around 2 a.m. on Tuesday July 13 outside the Chalmers Banquet Hall in the 9800 Block of Chalmers Street on the east side of town.

One of the victims of the shooting, a man in his thirties, was killed, authorities said. The other five people are either in serious condition or in temporary serious condition, officials said.

Suspect identified

White said police identified a suspect. On Tuesday evening, it was announced that an arrest had been made.

“We have identified a suspect,” White said at 2:21 pm Tuesday. “We hope to have an arrest in a few moments, probably before the end of this press briefing. “

He said there was an exchange of gunfire between people in the banquet hall and the suspect, who was shooting at the scene.

“We believe this is a known suspect and a targeted victim, so the community is not at risk,” White said. “It was sort of a conflict between the two parties involved. It was not a random shot.

Closure of the banquet hall

White said during the police department’s investigation into the shooting, officers realized the building had not been properly cleared since 2013.

He said DPD will work with Detroit’s Department of Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environment to shut down the banquet hall.

“We have had a number of incidents there,” White said. “About four years ago, we responded to an incident in which six people were shot and one died at that time. So we have problems with this company.

“It’s a problem for our community. We are not saying that incidents cannot happen, but it is the responsibility of company ownership to ensure that they have the necessary safety arrangements in place and that these things do not happen.

White said when his officers entered the banquet hall they found the company unlicensed. He said he planned to “take the appropriate steps to shut them down.”

“When they reopen, we’ll make sure they have the proper security arrangements, fire safety, lighting, all of those things,” White said. “All of these things will be discussed.”

White made it clear that he couldn’t provide any details that would jeopardize the investigation, but said police were using video footage and from the area’s Project Green Light.

He also confirmed that “well over 100 people” were inside the banquet hall before the shooting.

White does not know if all of the shooting victims were targeted. Officers found at least 20 used shell casings at the scene.

Police are still in the early stages of the investigation, but expect to learn much more about the details of the shooting once they take the suspect into custody.
